Tyfos
The circle at Tyfos
appears to be in good condition, with the stones attractively patterned with
litchens. There are clear signs of
an encircling bank, and the stones appear to be set on the inside of this now
eroded bank. Inside the circle, the
remains of the central mound can be seen.
Aubrey Burl gives it
the full name of "Tyfos-Uchaf", the high, ditched house. Some believe that the site is actually a dismantled cairn,
and that the remaining stones were simply the ballast. However there are some similarities with this site and that
of Bryn Cader Faner, where a cairn was later added to the existing stone circle.
Standing in its location north of the river Dee, between Bala and Corwen,
the circle can easily be seen from the track road that runs alongside the river
Dee.
Directions
On the A5 from Corwen to Bala, approx 1km after crossing the river Dee by bridge turn left. Cross the river Alwen by bridge and keep going to the T-junction, approx. 3km down the narrow road. Turn right. After passing Gwondl Bach Farm the road enters a forested area. The circle is in a field just past Tyfos Farm.
