Silbury
Hill
Not
far from Avebury stand this man made hill which to this day remains a mystery as
to its original purpose. The mound
has been excavated several times, but there have been no remains of any kind
found there, only sandwiched layers of soil and chalk.
When seen from West Kennet Long Barrow, the terrace near the top lines up
with the horizon. At 39 metres high, Silbury Hill is the largest prehistoric
man made mound in Europe. It is
also estimated that it took 18 million man hours to build, and that the building
work commenced in late July / early August.
The evidence for this belief is the samples of winged ants found during
an excavation in 1969 from the centre of Silbury Hill.
The samples are now on view in the Alexander Keiller Museum in the
village of Avebury.

Silbury hill can be reached on the A4 from Avebury village.
