Halligue Fogou
Cornwall
Although the original use of the Fogou is uncertain, there are theories that it may have been a storage cellar for the settlement that surrounded it, or that it may have been a refuge or ritual place. Halligue is situated with the earthwork of a settlement on an Iron Age Hillfort. It is believed to have been occupied during the Roman period as well as the Late Iron Age (200 BC - 400 AD). The Fogou comprises of a main passage way made from dry stone walling with large capstones, with subsidiary passages leading from it. Apart from the main entrance, there is a second smaller entrance to the Fogou , which unfortunately is closed off with a large metal grid.
Although the main passage is not very long and quite wide, it's extremely dark so a torch is a necessary requirement. Also, even on really warm days, the atmosphere inside the Fogou is very cool and damp.
Similar Fogous can be found at Chysauster Ancient Village and at Carn Euny.
