Eyam Moor

Peak District, Derbyshire

On Eyam Moor there is one freestanding and two embanked stone circles.  Although the sites have the very creative names of Eyam Moor I, II and III, the first site is more commonly known as Wet Withens.

Eyam Moor Circles II and III

Eyam Moor II is like Wet Withens in that it also is an embanked stone circle, and it lies close to the footpath across the moors.  Eyam Moor III lies close to II in the middle of a cairn field.  Set into the internal face of an earth bank, this site consists of four small stones, and whilst the bank itself is only small it contains a disturbed cairn with an entrance to the north, north west of the site.

Eyam Moor III is alone in the three circles as being freestanding.  This circle contains four stones that are still standing and two fallen stones.  It is thought that the circle originally had nine stones, all equally spaced.  There is no sign whatsoever of the enclosing bank that would have been expected here.  There is, however, a small cairn approx. half a metre high in the central area of the circle.
