Druids
Circle
Sited
on the lonely and remote moors, near to an ancient prehistoric pathway, sits
this evocative circle. Eleven of
the original stones remain standing, whilst other, smaller stones are scattered
around the perimeter of the circle. There
are several legends and tales about this circle.
One in particular relates to the slain bodies of infants being placed in
a carved seat on top of the of the stones.
There is a stone quite discernable in the circle which does indeed seem
to be hand carved. Although the original purpose of this carved stone is not
known, the tale of the slain infants is more than likely just a folk lore tale
rather than the actual use for the stone!
Nearby,
alongside the main path from the circle is what is probably the smallest stone
circle in the country. This unnamed
stone circle consists of five small stones placed close together and the inside
of the circle originally strewn with quartz.
Not very impressive, but worth taking a look at it whilst at Druid's
Circle.
Directions
From the village of
Penmaenmawr there is an ancient footpath that leads high into the hills above
the village. The circle is approx.
2miles along the route of the path. It
is possible to park where the road enters the moors at the boundary of the
National Park below the hill of Foel Lus.
