Cerrig
Duon & Maen Mawr
North of the Dan-yr-Ogaf caves in the upper Swansea Valley, in the valley of the river Tawe, is an egg shaped stone circle known as Cerrig Duon. Although the diameter of the circle is approximately 60ft, the stones in the ring are only quite small. North of the circle is a 6ft standing stone known as Maen Mawr or "Great Stone". To the north of this standing stone there are two smaller stones that are in alignment with the larger stone. Maen Mawr and the smaller stones are believed to have been particularly placed to mark the northernmost position of the sun on Midsummer's Day. There are also a series of spaced out stones to the north west of the circle that point towards an arrangement of four stones. The alignment coincides with the Midsummer sunset. Approaching the circle uphill is a tapering "Avenue" of small stones leading towards the circle but stop just short of the west of the circle.
