Carn Euny

Cornwall

The remains of this ancient settlement are very similar to those found at Chysauster.  The separate courtyard houses and their internal rooms can be very clearly seen.  There is a Fogou there, similar to the ones found at Chysauster and Halligue, which leads to a central round chamber.  Throughout the central chamber and the Fogou there is a reflective moss that grows on the walls giving the walls a distinct appearance.

Although the day was extremely misty when we were there, the view of the settlement and the surrounding landscape were fantastic.  Unfortunately the photos don't seem to do justice to the views.  Like Chysauster, there was an abundance of naturally growing heather throughout the village.

Also, for some reason that we were not able to find out, over the entrance of the central chamber, ribbons, hair ties and pieces of material had been tied to the bush that grew there.  As this is not a spiritual site such as a stone circle or other kind of altar we are at a loss as to why these offerings (if that's what they are) have been left here.  It does look rather nice though.

Directions

From the A30 getting towards Lands End, there are several sign posts that lead the way to Carn Euny.
