Brisworthy
Stone Circle
Cornwall
This
attractive circle was originally formed with 42 stones.
Today there are 24 surviving stones in the circle.
The height of the stones is graded upwards from the south of the circle
to the north. The tallest stones at
the north of the circle are approx 4ft in height.
The east side of the circle is straddled by two 3ft stones.
The
circle was reconstructed in 1909, prior to that there were only 3 stones
standing.
However, in our infinite wisdom, ahem, instead of following the path that lead to the circle, we'd got our directions mixed up and went through a style and up the large hill! At the crest of the hill we saw what we thought were the stones and headed over to them. It turned out to be a small stone circle with a row of stones leading from it. The stones in this smaller circle ranged from approx 2ft up to 3ft in height, and the circle was approx. 13ft across. After being slightly disappointed at the size of this circle, on our way down the hill, instead of going back down the way that we had come, we went back down the side of the hill and could clearly see the circle that we had been looking for in the first place!
On the bright side, we got to see a stone circle that we didn't know about, and after some investigations, we now know that it was a kerb-circle known as Ringmoor.
