Chysauster Ancient Village

Cornwall

The original inhabitants if this ancient Romano-Cornish settlement occupied the site almost 2,000 years ago.  A cluster of unique stone homesteads known as "courtyard houses" which are only found on the Lands End Peninsula and the Isles of Scilly.   The remains that are found at Chysauster, set against a backdrop of the moorland, give a good indication of what the settlement would have been like in its original state.  There is a Fogou here similar to the one at Halligue, but unfortunately we were unable to see the Fogou as it was closed off to the public for safety reasons.  Whether this was a temporary measure and we were unfortunate to go at the wrong time, or whether the Fogou is permanently closed off to the public we don't know.  Even so, the rest of the village was wonderful and definitely worth the visit.  The views of the settlement themselves are fantastic, with ferns and heather growing in all the nooks and cranies, adding colour to the white stones of the village.
